If you haven’t yet seen Identity Thief starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, well then you better get on that because you are seriously missing out (and it also came out a few years ago, 2013 to be exact).
The movie takes a serious and highly relevant issue (identity theft) and somehow turns it into one of the most hilarious comedies yet.
If you have yet to see it, we won’t spoil the whole movie for you, but basically the plot goes as follows: McCarthy makes a simple call to Bateman, claiming that he’s been ‘the victim of credit card fraud’ and that she just needs a few details of his in order to offer him a free service to ‘help him’.
These few simple details obviously included his social security number, and his credit card number too. McCarthy was able to easily make a copy of all of his personal identification cards, and take on his identity as Sandy (the gender neutral name helped her out), stealing everything possible from him, maxing out all credit cards, and overall making his life a living nightmare.
While Bateman could have been more skeptical about giving out his details on the phone, especially since he’s portrayed as a careful, smart guy, this is a classic example of what really goes on.
People want to believe the best of others, and give them the benefit of the doubt, especially when they feel desperate.
Thankfully, as we watch this movie, we can laugh about it. And as every Hollywood movie tends to end – it all works out, and they all live happily ever after.
But in reality, it doesn’t always work out for the best, and some people are truly robbed of their identities and life savings.
Watch the movie, enjoy it, and take it as a life lesson to be sure to always protect yourself.
Don’t let people take advantage of your vulnerability.
CallApp is here to help you do that, and make sure that you always know who’s calling.
