Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, people have always received calls and text messages that include the spread of false news, often from unknown numbers, and sometimes even from loved ones that forwarded on these messages without knowing otherwise.
Some information that’s spread may, in fact, be true and shared for the good of society, which we surely have to both keep an eye for, and be grateful for. But unfortunately, there is no shortage of cases where false information gets around too quickly, and too easily.
Today, in our current situation, there has been endless misinformation about the virus going around, stressing people out for no good reason, and sometimes even providing claims about how to prevent the virus that have no backing up, since as standing in the sun and drinking hot water in India to stay protected from the virus.
In Australia, it was reported that mass text messages were sent out about testing centers. These messages contained a link, which was in fact an attempt to steal bank details by installing malware on the phones of targets.
While now more than ever, this is surely not the time to be taking advantage of people and scamming them unfortunately this is our harsh reality.
We aim to protect users from spam callers and texts as much as possible — through Caller ID, Call Blocking and the ability to report spam numbers.
Always be sure to check the information that’s sent to you through a more reliable source, and most importantly, please stay safe folks.
